Gravel-shaped lowland stream

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The gravel-shaped lowland stream (type 16) is a flowing water type defined by the federal / state working group on water .

In North Rhine-Westphalia it was formerly referred to as the “gravel-shaped flowing water of the weathered areas and river terraces”

Water structure

Gravel -shaped lowland streams are similar to the gravel-shaped lowland rivers , but their catchment area is smaller than 100 km². They are mostly steep, fast-flowing streams that are repeatedly interrupted by short, calm sections. In contrast to sand- shaped streams, they are only slightly curved or meandering and have less pronounced impact slopes, but in some cases they are deeply underwashed by the banks. The bottom consists mainly of gravel and different proportions of stones and clay as well as stones. Boulders are often found in the moraine area . Gravel-shaped lowland brooks mostly flow in curb, hollow or bottom valleys. The type of water is reminiscent of low mountain streams in sections.

Flora and fauna

There are mainly flow-loving species that can colonize the prevailing hard substrates (gravel, stones). These are different species of caddis flies and mayflies, as well as small fish such as loach and minnow .

Even with the aquatic plants, there are only those species that can deal with the gravelly subsoil, such as red algae and spring moss . In the young moraine area , the aquatic plants are usually completely absent, and plankton are also absent.
