Mammillaria tonalensis is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet tonalensis means' from the location Puente de Tonala, Oaxaca, Mexico.

description

Mammillaria tonalensis forms larger pads from many offshoots with fibrous roots. The upright or splayed shoots are shaped like a coiled cylinder. They are green and can be up to 12 centimeters high or even higher and 2 to 3.5 centimeters in diameter. The warts are bluntly conical in shape. The axillae remain naked or they are only lightly covered with wool. A maroon central spine is present. It gets darker with age and is up to 1.8 inches long. The 9 to 12 radial spines are needle-like, straight and chalky white with a brown tip. They become up to 1 centimeter long.

The carmine red flowers have whitish edges. They grow to be up to 1.5 inches long and 1 to 1.2 inches in diameter. The fruits are bright red. They contain black seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria tonalensis is common in the Mexican state of Oaxaca .

It was first described in 1979 by David Richard Hunt . A synonym of Mammillaria tonalensis D.R.Hunt is Escobariopsis tonalensis (DRHunt) Doweld (2000).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
