Kiess is an impact crater on the eastern edge of the front of the moon on the southern edge of Mare Smythii , east of the Kästner crater and south of Haldane . The crater is very flat, since the interior of the lava the Mare was flooded.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1973 after the American astronomer Carl Clarence Kiess .
