It is a so-called tripod or tripod pole, as there are essentially only four stones left of the system, which was originally located in a cairn, which makes it aesthetically interesting. J. Fergusson (1808–1886) coined this term to describe these and similar megalithic systems ( Ballylumford , Ballykeel , Legananny , Llech-Y-Tripedd or Proleek ) of this type. The systems of a sub-type of the Portal Tomb are called Quoit in Cornwall and Wales .

The portal Tomb shows the classic properties from which the type derives its name. These include the two portal stones and the almost six meter long, sloping capstone that protrudes far on all sides and is one of the largest in Ireland. The megalithic complex is essentially complete. A low threshold stone between the 1.8 m high portal stones blocks the entrance. The rear and lower ends of the capstone do not rest on the end stone, as it usually does, but are raised by a small intermediate stone, the function of which was to increase the height of the chamber. Fragments of unadorned Neolithic pottery have been registered as the only finds.

A little west of this large stone grave lies Kilclooney More 2 , a much smaller and partially collapsed Portal Tomb. A modern field wall separates the two complexes, which once undoubtedly lay under a common stone mound, traces of which have been preserved. Also nearby is the relatively well-preserved Court Tomb by Kilclooney More .
