Kildare Castle

Kildare Castle ( Irish Caisleán Chill Dara ) is the ruin of a low castle in Kildare in County Kildare, Ireland . Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke , (1130–1176) had the moth built in the 12th century. Today the remains of a tower are all that remains of the castle above ground.

history

The Normans landed in Ireland in 1169 at Bannow Bay in County Wexford . A short break from her landing site took her to Kildare that same year. The following year the Earl of Pembroke arrived in Waterford with a larger troop and married Aoife , the daughter of Dermot McMurrough, King of Leinster . After his death in 1171 he became King of Leinster through his wife .

The Normans took over the economic and clerical centers of the Celtic population; Kildare was both, and so the Earl of Pembroke took his headquarters there. The settlement had to receive fortified protection to protect the settlers. This is probably how a moth originated in Kildare, of which the mound is still preserved today. The Normans are likely to have built a wooden castle on it; had it been made of stone, it would have been one of the first in Ireland. A castle in Kildare was first mentioned in 1185.

1302 the castle in Kildare was mentioned again in a document, namely that William, Earl Marshall had built a castle on the property of the church with the permission of the bishop. William, Earl Marshall, died 1219; so there must have been a castle back then.

In 1290 the castle fell to the De Vescy family . In 1294 O'Connor Faly raided the castle and his troops robbed the town and castle of money, fabrics, supplies and cattle worth £ 1000. Edward Bruce besieged Kildare Castle in the winter of 1315/1316 without success. The king then raised John FitzThomas FitzGerald to Earl of Kildare in 1316 .

today

Of the original four towers of the castle, as mentioned in 1331, only one remains today, as is part of the fortification wall. The tower dates from the 13th century and was probably used as a residential tower in the course of the 15th century . The walls, which stand on foundations from the 13th century, probably date from the 16th or 17th century.
