Killer Joe (Jazz Track)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Killer Joe is a composition by tenor saxophonist and arranger Benny Golson , in the typical 32-bar AABA form of jazz standards .

It was recorded for the first time by the Art Farmer / Benny Golson Jazztet in 1960 for the first album Meet the Jazztet and quickly made the new formation known. By “ Killer Joe” or “ Killers” , Golson meant certain women heroes who hung out with “ladies” in the nightclubs of his hometown Philadelphia. Golson gave a brief introduction to the recording, which he regretted in retrospect.

Quincy Jones popularized the track with his 1969 version on the Walking In Space album , which also features Golson's I Remember Clifford and Blues March .

Killer Joe was also attended by Art Blakey , Barbara Dennerlein , Bud Shank , Buddy Childers , Joki friend , Jeff Hamilton , Lionel Hampton , Joe Beck , Milt Jackson , Charlie Persip , The Manhattan Transfer and Rufus Reid gecovert . Prince did not release a cover version, but described the piece as one of 55 songs that inspired him musically.
