Whisper Not

Whisper Not is a jazz composition by tenor saxophonist and arranger Benny Golson .

The composition

Whisper Not written during Benny Golson time in the big band of Dizzy Gillespie in 1956 and is one of the compositions that Golson reputation as a composer of jazz standards established. It was first recorded by Lee Morgan in December 1956. Benny Golson himself recorded the piece for his album Benny Golson's New York Scene in October 1957, later it was played by Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers (Paris 1958), of which Golson was saxophonist and musical director at the time. From then on, Whisper Not was an integral part of the Messengers program and was repeatedly used by the Jazz Messengers , but also by Archie Shepp , Bud Shank , Jim Hall , Jon Faddis , Lee Morgan, Oscar Peterson , Hank Jones , Quincy Jones , Ray Bryant , Red Norvo , Shelly Manne , Tete Montoliu , Keith Jarrett , Wes Montgomery , Mel Tormé , Nancy Wilson , Thad Jones , Wynton Kelly and many others.

Form

Whisper Not has an AABA shape. The A section plays subtly with a minimalist two-tone motif and sophisticated ornamentation with references to two keys of C minor and D minor. In the B part, the dominant G7 is controlled via G minor, which leads back to the A part, the tempo is half as fast there. Often an alternatively melodic and rhythmically-hymnically composed A section is inserted between the solos or in the form, e.g. B. in a march rhythm, especially as a topic recording at the end, so that only the final BA part is exactly as at the beginning.
