Kilnaughton ( Gaelic : Cill Neachdain for "Nechtan's Church") is a village on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located on the south coast of the island in the northeast of the Oa Peninsula on Kilnaughton Bay . The name of the village is derived from the church Cill Neachdain ( Mechtan's Church ) on the bank .

description

In 1841 Kilnaughton consisted of just one farm occupied by a family of five. In the meantime Kilnaughton has developed into a small scattered settlement with a few houses. During an archaeological survey of the Kilnaughton area, the remains of a building were found which are dated to the 19th to early 20th centuries. Older ruins were not discovered. Mechtan's Church is a listed ruin that is surrounded by a cemetery. The oldest parts of the building may date from the 13th century.

Several caves exist near Kilnaughton. Long-term habitation was found in a four-meter-deep cave. Various layers were excavated in which fragments of pottery and flint tools were found. The cave was last inhabited in 1945. No evidence of habitation was found in the surrounding caves.
