Kim Il-yeop (born April 28, 1896 , † February 1, 1971 ) was a Korean writer, poet, journalist and South Korean Buddhist nun. She was an early Korean feminist and a supporter of the Free Love Movement. Her real name was Kim Won-ju and her nickname was Il-yeop .

Life

Kim lost her parents at a young age, which greatly influenced her later writing. She was unhappily married and studied at Ewha Hakdang (forerunner of Ewha Womans University ) and the Tokyo English Institute . In the 1920s she was part of the first generation of modern Korean writers. As a journalist she published articles in the Dong-a Ilbo and the Chosun Ilbo . From 1933 after her ordination as a nun she lived in the Buddhist temple Sudeoksa des Jogye Orderns until her death .
