Kim Joo-young (born January 26, 1939 in Chinbo , Kyŏngsangbuk-do ) is a South Korean writer.

Life

Kim Joo-young was born on January 26, 1939 in Chinbo , Ch'ŏngsong County, North Kyŏngsang Province . He spent his youth in poverty. According to his father's will, he attended the agricultural high school in Taegu , animal production department. However, his real interest was in literature and so he began to write poetry. In 1960 he was finally able to begin a two-year course in literature. After graduating from college, however, he embarked on a career that had no relation to literature.

In 1970 he was able to publish his novel On the Summer Hunt in a monthly magazine for literature ( Wôlganmunhak ). A year later, in October 1971, he received an award for the new novel Ruhephase . In this novel he first dealt with the life of the poor and their healthy attitude towards life.

Over time, he devoted himself more to his childhood experiences. Because of the poetic and sensitive language, it is very popular with readers. In works like Der Makler , Donnergrollen , Ein Fischer does not break the reed or The Stingray , the place of his childhood always forms the background of his stories.

He explains why he likes to choose his homeland as the background for his novels as follows: “We spend a very pure time in our childhood, both mentally and physically. These experiences naturally have a lasting impact on us. This is fateful for a writer. "

Kim Joo-young published his novel The Broker as a serial in a Seoul daily newspaper ( Seoul Sinmun ). The critics reacted positively, as they saw in this work a new way to the historical novel. The author researched more than ten times in the same market town he intended to write about. In addition, he was passionate about collecting information about the linguistic characteristics and customs of peddlers . The result was a masterpiece in which the documentary is in harmony with the literary imagination .
