Kim van Sparrentak

Kim van Sparrentak (born October 16, 1989 in Vlissingen ) is a Dutch environmental scientist and politician ( GroenLinks ). Sparrentak won a mandate in the 2019 European elections with the help of preferential votes and has since been a member of the ninth European Parliament as part of the Greens / EFA group .

Life

education

Kim van Sparrentak was born on October 16, 1989 in Vlissingen (province of Zeeland) in the Netherlands and grew up in the neighboring town of Middelburg . After completing school, she studied political science (BA) at the University of Amsterdam , followed by a master's degree in Urban Environmental Management at the University of Wageningen . After graduating, Sparrentak moved to New Zealand, where she did an internship in the public health sector in Wellington. After her internship, she worked at the New Zealand Center for Sustainable Cities.

After a year and a half in New Zealand, Sparrentak returned and dedicates her time primarily to environmental protection, among other things as communications manager for mobility at Milieudefensie . She is also involved in the anti-nuclear energy organization WISE Nederland and supports people from the Dutch-Belgian border region in the campaign for the closure of the Doel and Tihange nuclear power plants .

Political commitment

Sparrentak became politicized in the course of her studies and became a member of the GroenLinks youth organization DWARS , as well as the Federation of Young European Greens - she led both in the meantime.

In 2019, Kim van Sparrentak ran for 7th place in the GroenLinks party in the European elections. The party itself won 3 of the 26 Dutch mandates, van Sparrentak received over 26,000 preferential votes, so that instead of the third-placed Eline van Nistelrooij, it won the third mandate. Since then, Kim van Sparrentak has been a member of the ninth European Parliament as part of the Greens / EFA group . For her political group, she is a member of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection and an alternate member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs .
