Kind Hearted Woman Blues is a blues song that legendary Delta Blues singer Robert Johnson recorded on November 23, 1936 in room 414 of the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio , Texas . There are 2 different versions, the first recording can be heard on King of the Delta Blues Singers (1961), both versions on The Complete Recordings (1990). The original version was released in March 1937 on Vocalion 03416 and ARC 7-03-56 as a 78rpm single.
Kind Hearted Woman was the first song of the recording session and was modeled after "Cruel Hearted Woman Blues" by Bumble Bee Slim, this song was a hit with Slim, which in turn is based on "Mean Mistreater Mama" by Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell . Even if the song draws from many sources, Johnson connects the role models with a highly individual style.
Robert Johnson's oeuvre, including this song, was selected in 2003 by the National Recording Preservation Board of the Library of Congress and was recognized as a song that is culturally outstanding.
