Children's symphony

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The children's symphony (original title: Berchtoldsgaden-Musik ( Berchtesgaden -Musik), also known as Cassatio ex G ) is a chamber composition from the time before the Viennese Classic - which already gives an idea of later symphonic works of that musical genre. The authorship was unclear for a long time. The work was attributed to Leopold Mozart or his student Johann Rainsprechter , and Joseph Haydn and his brother Michael Haydn were also considered composers at times. According to more recent findings, Edmund Angerer is the actual composer of the “Children's Symphony”, but this thesis is also controversial among musicologists. In a monograph published in 1994, the Australian musicologist Robert Illing countered that the manuscript from Angerer's pen could also be a copy, so that it does not prove authorship. The fact is, however, that the composition from 1765, called “Berchtolds-Gaden Musick” by Angerer, is the oldest currently known recording of the “Children's Symphony”.

In addition to the usual orchestra, seven typical children's instruments from the Berchtesgadener War from the Berchtesgadener Land are used in the “Children's Symphony” : cuckoo, quail, trumpet , drum , ratchet , organ hen and cymbal star .

The complete work consists of the following seven movements :

  1. Marche
  2. Menuetto
  3. Allegro
  4. Menuetto
  5. Allegretto
  6. Menuetto
  7. Presto

Movement number 3 ( Allegro ) is certainly the best known of these , in which the main theme is clearly expressed.

The work was first given the nickname “Children's Symphony” in 1813 through a sheet music edition by the Hofmeister music publisher , which presented the work in a three-movement version. In this frequently played version, the work consists only of the movements [3.] Allegro - [4.] Menuetto - [7.] Finale (Presto) .
