King Kurt are a psychobilly - rock band of the 1980s from the United Kingdom .

history

Formed in 1981 with Jef Harvey ( vocals ), replaced by "Smeg" (Gary Cayton) after the "Zulu Beat" 7-inch single and before the Stiff Records deal; Paul ("Thwack") Laventhol and John Reddington ( guitars ); Rory Lyons on drums ; Bert Boustead on bass and "Maggot" on saxophone . Originally known as "Rockin 'Kurt and his Saur Krauts", later shortened to King Kurt . The band had a few minor hits in the UK single and UK indie charts, such as "Zulu Beat", "Mack The Knife" and "Banana Banana", alongside the top 40 hit "Destination Zululand". The band broke up in 1988, but three of the members performed live between 1992 and 1996.

In the early 1980s, King Kurts were known for their stage performances, throwing eggs and bags of flour and dumping buckets of wallpaper paste into the audience.

In 2010 the King Kurts gave their Reunion II concert, at which five of the six original members performed. Since then they have played a few live gigs a year.
