The Kings River ( English for " King's River ") is a river in California . It rises from three arms of the source in the Sierra Nevada .

The South Fork Kings River rises in the Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park in the Upper Basin , a high valley below the Palisades mountain range and flows through the Kings Canyon , which gave the national park its name. The Middle Fork Kings River rises further north in the national park, while the North Fork Kings River rises outside the national park in the adjacent John Muir Wilderness to the west . The North Fork and its tributary Helms Creek are still dammed in the mountains . The Kings River is dammed up immediately after the confluence of all its headwaters to Pine Flat Lake .

The river originally flowed into Tulare Lake , which was drained and is now used as an agricultural area in California's long valley . Today the Kings River between Hanford and Fresno is split into several artificial arms and its water is used to irrigate the fields. Small amounts of water only get into the former lake basin at some times of the year, where they seep away. The total length from the longest spring arm to the Tulare Lake Bed is about 200 kilometers.
