The scattered settlement of Kingston ( norfuk Daun a'Taun ) is the capital of Norfolk Island , an Australian suburb .
Kingston is on the Kingston Plain ( English Kingston Plain ), which rises about 20 meters above the sea at the foot of the edge step. The plain is about 1.5 kilometers long and up to 500 meters wide. Its highest point is Flagstaff Hill with 60 m .
Kingston is the center of the UNESCO World Heritage " Kingston and Arthur's Vale Historic Area ".
history
The name of the settlement commemorates the arrival of Lieutenant Philip Gidley King and 22 settlers on March 6, 1788. Kingston was initially known as Sidney or Sydney Bay . In 1796 it became the Town of Sydney . in honor of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney .
City construction
The Old Town is a scattered settlement above the ship investor Kingston pier . Modern Kingston was planned by the Royal Engineers according to the Hippodamian scheme from the 1830s . The city is crossed by two east-west streets (Bay Street and Quality Row), which are connected by short spur streets (Pier Street, Bounty Street and the former Bligh Street). The Watermill Creek is crossed by small stone bridges. Four main roads connect the town with the surrounding area (Country Road, Middlegate Road, Rooty Hill Road and Driver Christian Road). All Kingston buildings are in Old Town or on Quality Row with the exception of the seat of government on Dove's Plot Hill . In the center and west of the Eben are public parks, the golf course is in the east and the cemetery in the northeast.
Others
The settlement does not have its own administration and the local boundaries are not precisely defined. The UNESCO World Heritage Administration is responsible for public waste disposal and other municipal services. Kingston does not have a defined coat of arms or flag.
