Kinnaird Castle is a tower house on a ledge in the Braes of the Carse north of the settlement of Kinnaird in the Scottish council area of Perth and Kinross .

history

Kinnaird Castle around 1820 (from a watercolor)

During the reign of King Wilhelm I , the land around Kinnaird belonged to the family of that name. In 1674 it fell to the Threiplands of Fingask .

The Niederungsburg is from the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century. In 1610 a small building was added east of the tower. Once there was also a fortified courtyard or outer bailey west of the tower.

In the 19th century, the Tower House was a ruin without a roof. It was restored in 1855 and has been inhabited again since then.

description

The tower has four full floors and an attic. It has a rectangular floor plan that covers an area of approximately 11.7 meters by 8.3 meters. To the east is a small, two-story house with a floor space of around 4.4 meters × 4.1 meters, in which the kitchen with a large arched stove was located on the ground floor, which was expanded in 1955.

The Tower House itself reaches a height of about 18.2 meters; its walls are up to 2.15 meters thick. It has two entrances on its south facade; the one on the ground floor is closed with an iron grille. The second entrance on the 1st floor is now accessed by a stone staircase and once probably provided access to the battlement of the courtyard wall. Two windows in the east facade were enlarged in the 1960s.

Historic Scotland has listed Kinnaird Castle as a Category A Historic Building.
