Kirch is a small impact crater in the eastern part of the Mare Imbrium , a large lunar sea in the north-western quadrant of the moon. It is relatively isolated and the closest comparable crater is Piazzi Smyth in the northeast. The single peak of Mons Piton rises in about the same distance in an east-northeast direction.
The church is circular and bowl-shaped and its dark interior does not stand out from the surrounding area.
