Kirchdorf-Süd is a large housing estate in the south of the Hamburg district of Wilhelmsburg .

Location and development

Kirchdorf-Süd is located between Otto-Brenner-Straße in the west and the motorway (A1) in the east, exactly at the height of the Hamburg- Stillhorn motorway service station . The Stübenhofer Weg borders the settlement to the south; fields begin on the other side of the path. The Karl-Arnold-Ring runs on the north side of the settlement with block perimeter development on one side and the school grounds on the other side. The Karl-Arnold-Ring also serves - like the Dahlgrünring and Erlenring - the internal development of the residential area.

The settlement consists of four parts. Two of the parts belong to a 14-storey high-rise slab that runs in a north-south direction and is divided by the Karl-Arnold-Ring. To the south-west and north-east of it there are six- to eight-story buildings that are placed around the respective block edge. More than half of all apartments belong to SAGA , the rest to another five housing construction companies.

Due to the type of development as well as socio-economic data, Kirchdorf-Süd is a quarter that is clearly delimited from its surroundings and is managed as a separate statistical area (no. 16023). Kirchdorf-Süd has an area of 0.36 km². 6,238 inhabitants lived on it (as of 2015), which corresponds to a population density of 17,224 inhabitants / km².

history

Kirchdorf-Süd was built between 1974 and 1976, similar to the large Hamburg estates Steilshoop , Mümmelmannsberg and Osdorfer Born, which are comparable in terms of time of origin, conception and construction . With these large estates, city planners wanted to bring the concept of “ urbanity through density ” to the outskirts. The intended social mix did not materialize, however. These settlements soon became social hot spots .

In Kirchdorf-Süd, too, the proportion of people without work, without higher school qualifications and without knowledge of the German language was soon higher than the Hamburg average. The city of Hamburg invested in cultural facilities such as a children's farm, construction playground, leisure center, youth center and parents ' school in order to improve living conditions. Green areas and playgrounds were created to make life there more livable. The wrong occupancy tax was waived in order to attract higher earners and not to let the district become further impoverished.

In Kirchdorf-Süd there are two primary schools (Stübenhofer Weg and Schule an der Burgweide) and a district school (Stübenhofer Weg). The special school on Karl-Arnold-Ring was closed. As part of the IBA Hamburg (“Leap across the Elbe”), most of the school buildings on Stübenhofer Weg were demolished from 2009 to 2011 and replaced by new buildings. Remaining existing buildings were modernized and supplemented with extensions. At the site - i.e. for both schools - new buildings were built: a building for classrooms, administration with a cafeteria and a double gym with a reception extension.

In 2015, a good 6,200 people lived in 2,454 households in Kirchdorf-Süd.
