Johann Josef von Waldstein (Czech Jan Josef z Valdštejna ) (born June 26, 1684 , † April 22, 1731 ) was a Bohemian nobleman, entrepreneur and patron . From 1720 to 1731 he was Colonel Marshal of Bohemia.

Life

Johann Josef came from the Waldstein family . His parents were Ferdinand Ernst ( Arnošt ) Josef von Waldstein (1654–1708) and Marie Anna Kokořovská von Kokořov (1651–1687). On January 30, 1706 he married Eleonora Maria von Waldstein (1687–1749). Children came from marriage

After the death of his father in 1708, Johann Josef succeeded him. Although a large part of the city of Dux, including the old town hall, burned down on August 10, 1709 , there was an economic boom during the reign of Johann Josef. In 1713 he expanded the family fideikommissherrschaft Dux with Oberleutensdorf to include the allodial property Maltheuern . He founded textile manufacturers in northern Bohemia, whose goods were exported to all of Europe. At the beginning of the 18th century he exported his goods to the Middle East via the Oriental Company . In 1815 his operations were merged with the works of the Reichenberg manufacturer Röhmheld . In Oberleutensdorf , which had belonged to the Dux rulership since 1608, he founded one of the first cloth manufacturers in Bohemia in 1715. At times up to 400 workers were employed in it. Some of his skilled workers came from the factories of the Ossegg monastery , but also from companies in Bohemian Leipa and Iglau . He also hired skilled workers from Holland who trained the workers on site in the craft. Specialists from England were later added. He sent his local skilled workers abroad to learn new manufacturing processes. The work processes consisted mostly of simple tasks. This enabled women and children in particular to be quickly involved in the work process. He made building plots available to his workers and the immigrants in Oberleutensdorf. It was primarily through his work that Oberleutensdorf received market rights, a coat of arms and the town seal from Charles VI.

The castle in Dux was widened by two side wings, the Marienkirche was completed in 1721 and inaugurated on September 12, 1722 by the Leitmeritz bishop Johann Adam Wratislaw von Mitrowitz . In 1723 the construction of the St. Barbara Church and in 1728 the palace hospital with the Church of the Assumption of Mary was completed. A fountain with a statue of St. Florian was built on the town square and the Waldstein Gallery was opened in the castle. Well-known artists were involved in the work, including Wenzel Lorenz Reiner , Matthias Bernhard Braun and Ferdinand Maximilian Brokoff .

In 1728 Johann Josef built a castle chapel in the courtyard of the Kruschowitz brewery . The Lány Castle was also reconstructed at his endeavors . In the Trebitsch Monastery he had Franz Maximilian Kaňka renovate the portal and the basilica. In Nižbor an ironworks was built and Owl began with the mining of. His mints minted ducats with the image of the emperor and the Bohemian national saint John of Nepomuk.

Johann Josef von Waldstein died on April 22, 1731. His daughter Maria Maria Theresia Anna Eleonora, married von Fürstenberg , became the universal heir .
