The Church of Gregory the Illuminator ( Armenian Սուրբ Գրիգոր Լուսաւորիչի Եկեղեցի Surp Grigor Lusaworitschi Jekeghezi , Azerbaijani Müqəddəs Maarifləndirici Qriqori Kilsəsi , Bakı Erməni Kilsəsi ) is a former Armenian Apostolic Church in Baku . It was dedicated to Saint Gregory the Illuminator .

history

Cathedral early 20th century

The church was built in 1887 and survived the atheist age of Sovietization as well as the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Unlike the Church of Our Lady, which was demolished in 1992, and many places of worship that were destroyed throughout the Soviet Union during the 1920s and 1930s, this church building is the only Armenian church building in Baku that still stands today. In December 1989, in the run-up to the 1990 Baku pogrom , during the expulsion of the Armenian population from Azerbaijan (as a result of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict ), the church was set on fire and burned down in front of the police and fire brigade. The building has not been open to the public since then.

In 2002 the church was renovated and the church building was taken over by the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan to be used as their library. The former church has now been converted into the archives office of the Administrative Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan.
