history

The church was built from 1904 to 1905 according to a design by the Pirna architect Theodor Quentin in the style of historicism and was consecrated on October 22, 1905 in the presence of Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst . The construction costs amounted to 38,000 marks , which the parish raised itself. The previous building in the immediate vicinity, which is said to have stood around 1530, was sold for demolition at the same time.

During the First World War , the big bell of the peal was melted down in 1918 for armament purposes and replaced in 1922 by a new bell made of sound steel (another name for chilled iron), which was manufactured by the Schilling bell foundry from Apolda for 150,000 marks .

During combat operations in World War II , the spire was shot down on April 1, 1945 by the advancing artillery of the US Army . The church , like the rest of the town, was badly damaged on this day and the following. The church tower , which was initially rebuilt in a simplified form , was only restored to its original shape and height of 35 m in 2008 as part of a further renovation.

The oldest furnishings in the church are the baptismal font from 1622 and the tombstone of the monk Curt Hauser, who worked in Hörschel at the beginning of the 16th century and, among other things , planted the Lutherlinde in Hörschel in 1532 in honor of Martin Luther , which was only expanded in 1959 had to give way to the highway.

The Art Nouveau interior and decoration was restored by the parish from 1996 , as well as the pneumatic organ , the church window and door and the roof structure . Work on the reconstruction of the spire began in 2004 and was completed in 2008.
