History and architecture

Two churches were built on this site in the 17th and 18th centuries, both of which were destroyed by fires. The church, built from 1773 to 1783, was built in the style of the Serbian Baroque . It has a single nave, a flat, rectangular choir, an apse the same width as the nave in the east and a two-story baroque church tower attached to it in the west. Since it was built, the church has suffered numerous damage from wars such as World War II and the weather.

The interior is divided into bays, which are divided by a spherical barrel vault and arches. On the west side is the choir of the church which extends deep into the naos .

The facade is simply decorated, with double pilasters with profiled capitals and eaves. The church tower is also adorned with double pilasters. The entrances to the church are on the south and west sides. The church has an iconostasis from 1793.

In 1793 the interior painting of the church began. Grigorije Davidović-Opšić and Stefan Gavrilović created the icons of the iconostasis and the frescoes. The frescoes and icons were painted according to the will of the parish in the traditional style of the Orthodox Church. Opšić and Gavrilović painted mainly in the Baroque and Late Baroque ( Rococo ) styles .

Although both also incorporated elements of neoclassicism , the majority remained true to the baroque. They also painted the bishop's throne of the church. The baroque carvings of the iconostasis are the work of an unknown wood carver.

From 2000 to 2004 the church was extensively restored and renovated.
