The Church of the Birth of Mary ( Romanian Biserica Naşterea Maicii Domnului ) is a Greek Catholic church in the II. District Fabric ( German factory town ) of the western Romanian city of Timișoara ( German Timişoara ). It is located at Piața Alexandru Sterca-Suluțiu No. 1 near the beer factory in Timișoara .
history
The building was built in 1765 in the Austrian Baroque style and originally housed the Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary , but was donated to the Greek Catholic parish of Fabric in 1906 after the new Millennium Church was built.
After the government decree of 1948 by Petru Groza , the prime minister of the first communist government of Romania, the Greek Catholic United Church was dissolved. The building was only returned to the Greek Catholic Church in 1991.
Various repairs and renovations were carried out between 1998 and 2008. From the original furnishings of the Roman Catholic Church, the richly decorated and carved wooden pulpit still exists today. The iconostasis was created between 1910 and 1920 by the painter Simionescu .
