Domat Sogn Gion

The listed church Sogn Gion ( Romansh for John the Baptist ) in Domat / Ems in the canton of Graubünden is located on the northern edge of the village on the right bank of the Rhine on the Tuma Turrera .

history

Sogn Gion became the second parish church of Domat / Ems after Sogn Pieder. The time of the transfer of the parish dignity to Sogn Gion is not known.

The first written mention of the originally fortified church complex comes from the first half of the 12th century, when a "St. Johannis in Amite" is mentioned. The foundations of the massive tower, which with its two meter thick walls, was probably built as a watchtower, date from that time. The current building was built over a previous building; Remains of another tower from an undetermined time were found next to the ossuary in 1982. The towers belonged to a defense system to protect the nearby bridge, which at that time crossed the Rhine here.

The Gothic choir of today's church was built in 1504, the nave in 1515. On the occasion of the new consecration on July 5, 1515, the tower was increased by one storey. The Carinthian Andreas Bühler is presumed to be the builder . In the second half of the 17th century the choir stalls and the side altars were added to the church, as were the wall paintings of a Passion cycle; probably from Father Fridolin Eggert. The gallery was built in 1837.

lobby

The vestibule in the west from 1703 with its irregular floor plan was built on the remains of an enclosure wall that was part of the defensive system. The baroque crucifixion group on the western outer wall dates from the beginning of the 18th century.

An interior renovation took place in 1946/47, during which the vault decorations from 1515 were rediscovered and previous sins of style were removed. The outside of the church was renovated in 1960.

In the 2010s, damage to the roof and the tower had to be repaired several times in an emergency and there were more loose stones. The cost of a renovation was assumed to be 5 million francs in 2018. The canton and the federal government would take over around 1.3 million francs. The owner of the ensemble, the Roman Catholic Church Foundation Sogn Gion of the parish, expected further contributions from the community and the local community of Ems.

Interior

Look at the choir; the main altar is covered

The nave and choir are covered with a diamond vault. The wall paintings date from a little after 1515. In the choir arches there is a coat of arms of the Lords of Marmels , who sat at the nearby Rhäzüns Castle until 1553 . The wall paintings, a picture of John by the pulpit and two angels above the choir arch, date from 1689 and could have been made by Father Fridolin Eggert (1655–1709) from Disentis , who also painted the exterior of the ossuary.

A staircase leads from the raised choir to the lower crypt-like sacristy .

The late Gothic winged altar with John the Baptist as the central figure is dated 1504. There are various statements about the Creator; The sculptor's workshop of Niklaus Weckmann and Jörg Syring the Younger (* 1455) are mentioned. The two baroque altars date from 1686 and 1689. It can be assumed that the Virgin Mary originally stood in the main altar; The cut, the fall of the clothes and the facial features indicate this. The choir stalls date from around 1670.

The life-size Johanness bowl from 1515 is annually on the 29th. August, the feast of the decollation S. Johannis exhibited on the main altar.

Ossuary

Ossuary, from the south

The ossuary to the east of the church was built in 1693. The depiction of the Last Judgment, restored in 1913 and 1974, comes from Fridolin Egger.

The early Gothic group of tombs in the Heilggrab chapel with the reclining Christ and two wailing women made of limewood, one of the oldest depictions of the Holy Sepulcher, dates from the end of the 13th century. Opposite in the ossuary is a figure of the Archangel Michael as a soul weigher.
