The Catholic Church of St. Oswald is located in Wimmental , a suburb of the city of Weinsberg ( Heilbronn district , Baden-Württemberg ). It is dedicated to Oswald of Northumbria .

Building history

The church was built from 1845 to 1849 by the royal Württemberg finance authorities in place of a smaller chapel. The previous building was built in 1453 by Georg von Neuenstein. The lower part of the choir tower from 1453 was taken over for the 21.5 m long and 13.2 m wide new building. A new octagonal tower structure was placed on the remaining square tower. The new church building was consecrated on June 26, 1849 by Bishop Josef von Lipp .

Architecture and equipment

The building has 3 long, high, "arched" windows on both sides, both on the south and north sides.

On the western side of the gable is a "round arched" entrance portal with 2 round columns and a fronton (tympanum). This can be reached via 9 steps. The entrance portal is flanked by the statues of the two apostles and princes of the apostles Simon Peter (attribute: church key) and Paulus of Tarsus (attribute: sword).

In the east is the choir with a "round-arched" high triumphal arch. There are two steps to get to the choir area. There is a small high altar there. Above it a round window. Otherwise, the choir has no side windows on the south and north sides. The sacristy was added to the north side of the choir. The church nave is accessed from the east via the sacristy. The pulpit is located high above this entrance door of the sacristy to the choir.

There is a baroque side altar in each of the two corners of the nave. The two side altars from 1847 were designed by the painter Knüpfer from Neckarsulm for 450 guilders. The side altars are adorned with statues of St. Joseph and St. Aloysius (both 1898).

The first church organ, built by the Heilbronn organ builder Johann Heinrich Schäfer for 1,400 guilders, also dates back to 1847 . Today's church organ was created by Karl Kopetzki in 1981. The interior of the church is decorated with a “Lourdes statue” (1891). The ceiling painting was created in 1915 by the painter Reihing from Stuttgart.

Inside the church there is an urn-shaped baptismal font from 1691 with the initials CS (Closter Schöntal).
