Suteracher Church

The Suteracher Church is an Evangelical Reformed church in Zurich's Altstetten district .

history

As Altstetten grew to become the largest district in Zurich, the call for more Reformed church buildings in the more remote parts of the district became loud, as the accessibility of the Old Church and the New Church of Altstetten seemed too difficult. A project presented by Alvar Aalto in 1967 for a church on the Suteracher was rejected as being oversized. Since the building site for a church in Suteracher had already been acquired, it could be made available to the Catholics for temporary use. When the aging Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Cross on Saumackerstrasse was replaced by a new building, the Catholics were able to build the Titus Church on the building site of the Reformed Church in the Suteracher area in 1977 . It was a church of the type Fastenopferkirche , which was built 17 times in Switzerland by the Fastenopfer aid organization . When the newly built parish church was finished, the question arose whether an ecumenical church should not be maintained in the Suteracher area. Since the Tituskirche was not ideal, it was sold to a free church in Dietlikon . After an ecumenical church was initially planned, the Catholics had problems with canon law because the building site belonged to the Reformed Church and building law was not permitted. That is why the Reformed parish established the Suteracher Church as the sole sponsor in 1982, but makes it available to Catholics for regular use. The architect was Benedikt Huber , who also built the St. Mauritius Church in Regensdorf . In 1985 the city of Zurich awarded the Suteracher Church the award for good building .

Building description

On the street Am Suteracher 2 rises the small church with cubic shapes and a crown-like structure including a bell carrier. Despite its small dimensions, the sacred character of the church is well expressed thanks to its sculptural form. The lighting in particular gives the interior its own character. A foyer and other ancillary rooms complete the church to form a parish hall.

organ

In 1981 an organ for the Suteracher church was built by Orgelbau Geneva AG, Genève. The instrument has 4½ stops on a manual and attached pedal .
