The Church of Hangvar ( Swedish Hangvar kyrka ) is a country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Forsa and to the pastorate Lärbro in the Diocese of Visby .

location

The church is located in the northwest corner of Gotland, 32 km northeast of Visby , 16 km north of Slite and 8.5 km northwest of Lärbro.

Church building

Hangvar Church appears to be an almost uniformly listed structure from the 13th century. The choir and nave are, however, older than the tower, which still has a beveled base. The sacristy was built in the 18th century. The other bases are probably weathered , as with the När . Bricks were used for the tower and choir portal as well as the window frames (similar to the Vall ) . As with the Gammelgarn , a crowned man's head made of limestone is walled in above the nave portal with its decorated capital ribbons . The four vaults of the nave rest on a central column, the base of which, like that of the baptism in Björke, has grotesque corner heads. The choir still shows the low arched windows from the Middle Ages, while the large windows in the south wall of the nave were added in the 19th century.

Furnishing

The baptism (shell cupa type) made of limestone dates from the time the church was built (around 1250) and is the only surviving inventory from the Middle Ages. However, the Gotlands Fomsal Museum in Visby contains six medieval wooden sculptures that once belonged to Hangvar, including a fragmentary triumphal crucifix from the 12th century. A reconstruction of the cross has been hanging in the triumphal arch since 1986 . The pulpit was made in 1633. However, this year is probably only valid for the pulpit, while the staircase and ceiling were added in the later 17th century. For a time, a small crucifix, signed GLB 1682, was used as the only altar ornament. According to the inscription, the wooden altarpiece with a painted representation of the Lord's Supper was made in 1684.

The church was restored in 1952/53 according to plans by the architect Erik Fant.
