Kaarlela Church

The Church of Kaarlela is a church in the Finnish town of Kokkola . It is located in the Kirkonmäki district south of the city center and was formerly the parish church of the Kaarlela parish , which goes back to the historic parish of Kokkola and originally surrounded the city of Kokkola. Today it is one of two churches, next to the church of Kokkola , which are used jointly by the Finnish and Swedish-speaking parishes of Kokkola, two Evangelical Lutheran parishes in the Kokkola community. The church of Kaarlela goes back to a medieval stone church from the early 16th century, but was converted into a cruciform church with a west tower in 1786–1789.

history

Kaarlela Church was probably built between 1500 and 1530. Presumably it replaced a previous wooden building that had been built after Kaarlela had been elevated to a chapel parish in the parish of Pedersöre in the early 15th century . In its original form it was a typical medieval stone church with a rectangular nave and an attached sacristy on the northern side and an armory on the southern long side.

Kaarlela Church has been rebuilt several times throughout its history. The sacristy was expanded as early as 1699, and in 1711 the armory was expanded into the so-called “New Church”. Between 1786 and 1789, Kaarlela Church was completely redesigned. By adding a northern and southern cross arm, for which the sacristy and parts of the walls of the "New Church" and the nave were demolished, the church was given a floor plan in the form of a Greek cross . A new sacristy was added to the eastern end of the former nave. Between 1709 and 1803 the western cross arm was extended by around five meters and a church tower was attached to the extended component . This gave the church its present form, in which the original medieval church can hardly be recognized.
