Church of the Refuge in Rockenau

The Refuge Church is a Protestant church building in Rockenau, a district of Eberbach in the Rhein-Neckar district in Baden-Württemberg .

history

In the small town of Rockenau, which is part of the parish in Eberbach, there was originally no church building. It was only the influx of refugees and displaced persons in the period after the Second World War that created the need for a separate church, which was built in 1959 according to plans by the Berghausen architect Einwächter.

description

The elongated church building was erected as a self-supporting wooden roof construction on a natural stone base. The choir area is oriented to the southeast. The nave, which offers space for 168 people, is bordered on the long sides by drawn-in half-height walls with stained glass picture window friezes above, so that the choir area facing south-east opens up like a transept. A gallery with additional space for 22 people has been added to the west gable . The gable walls have narrow light slits at their upper end through which the interior is illuminated. Under the roof protruding through the drawn-in frieze walls, there is an open gallery to the Neckar valley in the northeast, and the glazed sacristy to the southwest . Christof Grüger from Salzelmen designed the picture window friezes with motifs of salvation , the crucifix was made by E. Homolka from Königsfeld. There is a parish hall in the basement of the church.

At the north-east corner of the church, a free-standing, 23.5-meter-high bell tower was built, connected to the church only by a walkway , in which three bronze bells from the Heidelberg foundry Schilling are located.
