The Church Mosque ( Albanian  Kishë-Xhamia , also called Imperial Mosque, Halil Skura Mosque, Castle Mosque or Church of St. Mary ) is a mosque and former Catholic church in the Montenegrin port city of Ulcinj . It has a minaret that is badly damaged and is a mix of Renaissance architecture and Ottoman architecture .

history

The former church of St. Mary was on the site of the mosque and forms its core. It is located in the old town and was built by the Venetians in 1510 . On the west side of the church, the original church wall is still well preserved. The church has an irregular square with an entrance. The portal with a door frame from the Renaissance is still preserved in the church. There is an archivolt over the door .

After Ulcinj was conquered by the Turks in 1571 , the church became the mosque of Sultan Selim II , and in 1693 it became the city mosque. Since the mosque initially had no vakëf from which it could be financed, its employees were paid from the state budget and the mosque was named Xhamia Mbretrore ( Imperial Mosque ). Four new windows were built and the side walls rebuilt. Hajji Halil Skura added a minaret to the building in the lower part, on a rectangular base that was made narrower on the top.

With the conquest of Ulcinj by Montenegrin troops in 1880, the mosque's religious use ended. Today the city's Archaeological Museum is located in the building.
