Foundations of the Church of Agnestad

The church ruin of Agnestad is a church ruin (Swedish. Ödekyrka) in the rural parish of Falköping in the Swedish province of Västra Götalands län .

description

Only the foundation walls of this medieval church are preserved today. The remains of the foundation show the floor plan of a round church ( Swedish rundkyrka ). Its round central building had a diameter of about seven meters and a wall thickness of 1.1 meters. In the east it had a rectangular apse , which presumably housed the altar. It is surrounded by an old church square framed with field stones. It is located north of the Ålleberg mountain and southeast of Falköping. Due to its small size, it can be assumed that the parishioners present spent the services standing.

history

The church was built in the 2nd half of the 12th century. As with the Church of Skörstorp and the Church of Dimbo-Ottravad , the order for this was given by the Bishop of Skara , Bengt I. den gode . According to other sources, the foundation is said to go back to St. Siegfried von Växjö . Both were bishops of Skara . St. Siegfried is also responsible for the construction of the Östra Gerums Church, which is about 10 km to the east, and the Friggeråker Church , which is just 4 km to the north .

During archaeological excavations, remains of earlier Christian stone graves from the 11th century were discovered. The results of their investigation suggest that there must have been a wooden church at this point. The church was abandoned in the second half of the 16th century.
