Heidesee in the Kirchheller Heide

The Kirchheller Heide is a green and forest landscape in the west of Bottrop - Kirchhellen in the North Rhine-Westphalian Ruhr area .

The Kirchheller Heide is part of the Hohe Mark-Westmünsterland Nature Park and, with around 100 km of marked cycling and hiking trails and 23 km of bridle paths, is of great importance for local recreation in the Ruhr area. The core area is the heather and moorland of the Kletterpoth , which has been a nature reserve since 1926.

The Kirchheller Heide has a size of about 2000  hectares and, in addition to the core areas, also includes the Fernewald , the Grafenwald and the Köllnischen Wald . Geologically, it extends over the Lower Rhine sand plates between Lippetal in the north and Emschertal in the south. The wet forests near the groundwater are traversed by Spechtbach , Rotbach and its tributary Schwarzbach . The stream systems are characterized by their natural floodplain vegetation . Damming effects of the high-level groundwater lead to swamping and bog formation, especially in depressions, and later to corresponding typical forest vegetation with a high proportion of alder .

The former gravel pit Heidesee can be found in Kirchheller Heide .
