Kirkee , also Khadki , is a city in the Indian state of Maharashtra . The city belongs to the metropolitan area of Pune .
The city is part of the Pune District . Kamptee has cantonment status . The city is divided into 8 wards . On the cut-off date of the 2011 census, it had 78,684 inhabitants, of whom 43,837 were men and 34,847 were women. Hindus make up the majority of the city's population with a share of over 70%. Muslims have a share of 13%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 78.68%.
Khadki was the site of the Battle of Khadki , fought between the British East India Company and the Marathas in 1817 , in which Baji Rao II , the last Peshwa of the Marathas, was defeated. Soon after the war, the British established quarters here. Today the place is a base of the Indian armed forces .
Kirkee Station is on the Indian Railways Mumbai to Pune route .
