The Kirkmadrine Church is a church building near the Scottish town of Sandhead in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. It is also classified as a Scheduled Monument .

history

Presumably it is a site that has been used since early Christian times. This is indicated by cross finds that are dated to the 5th to 6th centuries. It is possible that there was even a monastery at this location. Other finds date from the 8th to 12th centuries. Later the parish church of the surrounding Parish was located there . Today's Kirkmadrine Church was built by Lady McTaggart Stewart of Ardwell in the late 19th century. In recognition of the long church history at this location, the church was designed in the medieval Romanesque style .

description
