Kirkwood is a city in the South African province of Eastern Cape (Eastern Cape). It is the administrative seat of the Sundays River Valley Community in Sarah Baartman District .

geography

In 2011, Mount Kirkwood had 5,371 inhabitants (census). Afrikaans (83%) and isiXhosa (13%) are spoken most frequently . The township of Bontrug is only a little to the east and has 8,394 inhabitants, 96% of whom are black.

Kirkwood is located south of the Rietberg Mountains , which are up to 600 meters high and belong to the Addo Elephant National Park , around 50 kilometers from the Indian Ocean . It is 40 kilometers to Uitenhage in the south.

The climate is subtropical . In 1928, the highest outside temperature ever recorded in South Africa was recorded at 50.3 ° C.

history

After 1812, the governor of the Cape Colony , Sir John Francis Cradock , gave farmland to Boers who fought the Xhosa in the Fourth Border War in what is now the urban area . In 1885 the place was founded as Bayville . In 1913 it was re-established on the territory of the Farm Gouwernements Belooning and named after the former owner of the farm, James Somers Kirkwood. From 1877 onwards he had opened up the surrounding area for agriculture. In 1950 the place received the municipal status.

Economy and Transport

The Sundays River Valley is mainly used for growing citrus fruits . The acreage west, south and east of Kirkwood is around 120 km². The annual Kirkwood Wildfees ("Kirkwood Wildfest"), which has around 45,000 visitors each, is significant for tourism .

The city is on the R336 trunk road, which runs almost parallel to the R75 to the south . A short branch line used in freight traffic runs from Appolisville near Addo northwest to Kirkwood.
