Kistakuz (also: Khistevarz or Qistakuz ) is a jamoat in the Tajik province of Sughd with 43,346 inhabitants.
Kistakuz is located in northwest Tajikistan, immediately north of the border with Kyrgyzstan . To the north of Kistakuz lies the Kairakkum Reservoir, the largest reservoir in Tajikistan. With the A376 one of the most important national highways runs through Kistakuz.
The city gained national fame when there was an exchange of fire between state forces and a group of fugitive men in May 1997 . The group consisted of at least 10 men accused of planning the assassination attempt on Tajik President Rahmon on April 30th that year. These were caught by government troops in Kistakuz and there was an exchange of fire in which five men died and two other members of the group committed suicide.
