Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art
The Kitakyūshū Municipal Museum of Art ( Japanese 北九州 市立 美術館 , Kitakyūshū Shiritsu Bijutsukan , German "Kitakyūshū Municipal Art Museum") is the art museum of the Japanese city of Kitakyūshū .
Location and architecture
The building is located in the Sayagatani District (Address: Nishi-Sayagatani-machi) of the Tobata District . The building stands in Bijutsunomori Park on a hill from which large parts of the city can be seen. The museum, which opened in 1974, was built according to plans by the architect Arata Isozaki . The striking appearance of the modern concrete building includes two gallery buildings clad with square tiles, which protrude as crossbars over the core building. In 1987 the museum received an extension. Since 2003 there has also been a branch of the museum in the center of Kitakyūshū on the banks of the Murasaki River, in which mainly temporary exhibitions are shown.
collection
The collection includes around 6,000 works of art, including numerous works on paper. The focus of the collection is on Japanese works of art from the 19th and 20th centuries. These include traditional Japanese color woodblock prints of ukiyo-e by artists such as Utagawa Kunisada , Utagawa Kuniyoshi , Utagawa Hiroshige , Katsushika Hokusai , Suzuki Harunobu , Tsukioka Yoshito and Kitagawa Utamaro . In addition, there are works by artists who worked in the western style ( Yōga ). These include works by Imanishi Chutsu , Katata Tokuro , Kishida Ryūsei , Koide Narashige , Koga Harue and Toyama Goro . In addition, there are works by modern Japanese artists such as Kinosuke Ebihara or Tadashi Kawamata in the museum .
In the area of Western art, some works of French Impressionism are shown, such as Woman with a Straw Hat by Pierre-Auguste Renoir , Monsieur and Madame Manet by Edgar Degas or the water lily pond in the shade of a willow by Claude Monet . There is also a Paris in the morning street scene by Pierre Bonnard and the sculptures La Grande Penelope by Antoine Bourdelle and Pierre De Wiessant by Auguste Rodin .
