The fish genus Kiunga with two described species from the blue-eyed family is endemic to the area of the upper reaches of the Fly River near the eponymous city of Kiunga , Papua New Guinea .

features

The blue eyes of the genus Kiunga differ from the other genera by differences in the scaling, skull structure, teeth, and fin shape and rays. In particular, the front dorsal fin is hardly developed. In contrast to many other blue eyes, there is no visible gender dimorphism . The bodies of living fish (and mostly the fins) are transparent. The fish of the genus Kiunga are only about three centimeters long.

Occurrence and habitat

Kiunga has so far only been found in a small area between Kiunga and Tabubil on the upper reaches of the Fly River (about 900 km upstream from the mouth). There the fish are found in small, slow-flowing rainforest streams with clear, soft water of around 25 ° C.
