Kjalarnes is a peninsula in Iceland 10 km north of the capital Reykjavík .

It is located in the middle of Faxaflói south of Hvalfjörður and north of Kollafjörður . The peninsula consists of the volcanic mountain range of the Esja, piled up by basalt and tuff . The largest settlement in the area is Grundarhverfi . The independent municipality of Kjalarneshreppur has belonged to Reykjavík ( Reykjavíkurborg ) since 1998 .
