Monasteries Haghpat and Sanahin is one of the UNESCO -listed site of world cultural heritage in Armenia . The World Heritage site includes the Haghpat Monastery and the Sanahin Monastery , two monastery complexes of the Armenian Apostolic Church , the oldest components of which date from the 10th century, and the Sanahin Bridge, a stone bridge over the Debed from the 12th century, which is the oldest secular monument in Armenia .

background

Armenia is the oldest Christian state in the world. Already in 301 (according to other sources 314) King Trdat III raised. the Christianity to the state religion . The Armenian Apostolic Church is one of the Oriental Orthodox churches that separated from the Roman Imperial Church in the 5th century . In the Middle Ages, numerous Armenian Apostolic monasteries emerged, including in the 10th century the two monasteries Haghpat and Sanahin, located in neighboring towns on the high plateaus on Debed.

registration

The monastery Haghpat was the basis of a decision of the 20th meeting in 1996 World Heritage Committee registered as a heritage site in the list of UNESCO World Heritage. The entry was made on the basis of criteria (ii) and (iv). The reason for the entry states, among other things:

Haghpat Monastery ... is an exceptional example of ecclesiastical architecture that developed in Armenia in the 10th to 13th centuries and is unique in this region due to the mixture of elements of both Byzantine church architecture and the traditional local architectural style.

The resolution suggested that an extension to the Sanahin Monastery , the nearby Sanahin Bridge and the Kayanberd Fortress near Haghpat should be considered. In 2000, at the 24th meeting of the World Heritage Committee, the World Heritage site was expanded to include the Sanahin Monastery and the Sanahin Bridge and renamed Haghpat and Sanahin Monasteries .

scope

The world heritage site consists of three separate areas. These cover a total of 5809 ha of protection . The protected areas of the two monasteries Haghpat and Sanahin are still surrounded by buffer zones.

Haghpat Monastery

Haghpat Monastery is surrounded by a wall with round towers. The oldest building is the "Surb Nschan" Church of the Holy Cross, the construction of which began in 976 and was completed in 991. Other buildings include, among other things, the porch of the church designed as a Gawit , the Grigorkirche, the Chapel of Our Lady, a separate bell tower as well as a chapter house and a library, both of which are attached directly to the church.

Sanahin Monastery

The Sanahin Monastery, founded shortly before the Haghpat Monastery (the name means in Armenian: "This is older than that") is also surrounded by a wall. The oldest building is the Church of Our Lady "Surb Astvatsatsin" from the 930s, the largest is the Church of the Redeemer "Surb Amenaphrkitsch", both with their own Gawit. The academy is located between the two churches. Other buildings are the Grigorkirche, a bell tower and a library.

Sanahin Bridge

The Sanahin Bridge from 1192 leads from the flat north bank of the Debed to the steep south bank. To compensate for the difference in height, the bridge was provided with numerous steps. Stylized lions adorn the parapet walls.
