background
Armenia is the oldest Christian state in the world. Already in 301 (according to other sources 314) King Trdat III raised. the Christianity to the state religion . The Armenian Apostolic Church is one of the Oriental Orthodox churches that separated from the Roman Imperial Church in the 5th century . From the 2nd to 4th centuries Etchmiadzin , then called Vagharschapat, was the capital of the kingdom and also became the seat of the Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Therefore, his churches are considered an important example of early Armenian church architecture. These are predominantly cross-domed churches , mostly in the form of a tetraconch (central building with four conches ). 641 relocated Catholicos Nerses III. Ischkanetsi moved from Etschmiadzin to neighboring Zvartnots and had a new official seat and a new cathedral built there.
