Klappstau is a device with which peat canals were made navigable despite different water levels, when in earlier times peat ships brought the peat from the bog to the cities or to brickworks.

description

Dump traffic jam on the Oste-Hamme Canal near Findorf , Gnarrenburg community

The canals used to bring the peat from the moor to the cities did not always carry enough water. Therefore the water had to be dammed. But the peat ships had to be led over the barrages . There were several technical devices for this:

  • Schütte : planks were sealed joints put in a barrage. If a peat boatman wanted to drive over the chute, he had to take out the planks and put them back in after passing through. It was a tedious business. A lot of water was lost. A subsequent peat boatman sometimes had to wait until enough water was dammed up again. In the Heiser Canal z. B. 18 Schütte to be overcome on the way to Bremen, in the Gackau another eight.
  • Coats : In some places the peat ships had to be pulled over land - e.g. B. when a dike had to be overcome. Sometimes horse-drawn vehicles or winches did this for a fee.
  • Folding ropes : The invention of the folding ropes was a great relief. In contrast to the chutes, one or more planks were not removed, but the stowage folded down when a ship drove against it - hence the name. When a ship went upstream, it had to be pulled ( grained ) over the folding stowage . When passing through a dam, less water was lost downstream - consumption was lower.

There are folding ropes to look at in Heise and in the Torfschiffswerft-Museum Schlußdorf in Worpswede.
