Mission festival and artists' colony in Worpswede

The Missionsverein Schlußdorf , founded in 1878 and celebrating its 141st mission festival in 2019, offered Fritz Mackensen , who was staying in neighboring Worpswede, the motif for his monumental painting (almost 3 × 5 m) outdoor worship (on display in the State Museum Hanover ), which shows Schlußdorfer absorbed in prayer, with their simple houses in the background. The painting shown in the Munich annual exhibition of artists of all nations in the Glaspalast in Munich in 1895 was awarded the first class gold medal and established the reputation of the Worpswede artist colony .

Peat Shipyard Museum

The peat shipyard museum for peat barges has existed in the former Grotheersche Werft (1850 to 1954) since 1977 . The Schlußdorf local history association runs the museum shipyard and its members and volunteers set up and maintain the museum themselves.

The former peat shipyard is the only one of its kind preserved as a museum in northern Germany. The museum is one of Worpswede's tourist attractions, among which it is a gem. Since 1986, every year in July, people from Schlußdorf and outside visitors have celebrated the village festival stone oven festival in the museum and outdoor area .
