description

The former nature reserve is located northeast of Osterholz-Scharmbeck and east of the district of Sandhausen, which belongs to Osterholz-Scharmbeck, on the edge of the Teufelsmoors . It is a raised moor on a low moor on the Geestrand , which has been changed by peat extraction. While the central area of the bog was industrially peated in the middle of the 20th century, hand peat cuttings from the post-war period can predominantly be found in the peripheral areas.

In the former protected area, there are bushy areas, broken birch and birch bog forests as well as peat moss and bog heaths . Vibrating lawns have formed in former peat cuttings . There are grassland areas in particular in the edge areas and in a strip that runs through the center of the area .

The area is home to various amphibians and reptiles , including the moor frog , wood lizard , grass snake and adder . Open water areas and peat cuttings offer dragonflies a suitable habitat. The former nature reserve is the habitat of typical high moor butterflies and beetles . The grasslands accommodate grassland birds such as curlew , corncrake and lapwing , trees are habitat for red-backed shrike , warbler , black and whinchat .

The area is drained to the Göttergraben in the north, to the Pferdegraben in the east and to the Neuer Speckgraben in the south. The three trenches flow to the Beek , a tributary of the Hamme .

A hiking trail runs in the north of the former nature reserve. The area is crossed by a road roughly in the middle.
