The combined municipality of Hambergen on the northern edge of the Osterholz district extends over an area of 135 km² and is therefore the second largest municipality in the Osterholz district in terms of area.

The integrated community was formed in the course of the regional reform in 1974 from the communities of Axstedt , Hambergen , Holste , Lübberstedt and Vollersode and named after the most populous community.
