The Torfkanal and Randmoore is a former nature reserve in the village of Teufelsmoor in the town of Osterholz-Scharmbeck in the Osterholz district of Lower Saxony .
It belongs to a formerly large raised bog area , the rest of which is commonly referred to as the Teufelsmoor . The former protected area bears its name after the peat canal, via which the peat extracted was previously transported to Bremen for fuel production, for example , and the farmers were able to transport the harvested hay from their meadows to the farm .
General
The former nature reserve "Torfkanal und Randmoore" is around 196 hectares in size. It was placed under nature protection on June 1, 1981 by the Lüneburg district government . On October 3, 2019, the " Teufelsmoor " nature reserve, designated on April 20, 2017, was opened . Part of the land in the area is owned by the Osterholz district.
According to the Lüneburg district government, the protection was placed “... in order to protect the now rare habitat of bog with its typical animals and plants. In the long term, the peat moss should also be promoted through waterlogging measures on partial areas so that the bog can grow again. The meadows on the Beek are to be preserved and developed as an example of an extensively managed moor landscape. "
nature
Today, the moor is no longer an intact high moor, but has been impaired over the decades by drainage , agricultural and industrial peat extraction. After the end of the mining, a moor birch forest was created in the unused areas , while the animals and plants typical of the raised bogs can still be found in the adjacent areas. The extensively used grassland areas between the peat canal and the Beek are particularly valuable for nature conservation.
Wildlife
The adder is relatively common in the former protected area . The breeding birds include blackbirds , stonechats and red-backed kitties. The Montagu's Harrier , which breeds in the Hamm meadows, looks for food in the area. As winter guests in the region, hen harriers and short-eared owls use the area as a sleeping place. The woodcock also winters here .
