Bergedorf is a part of the municipality Worpswede in the district of Osterholz in Lower Saxony .

history

Bergedorf was founded around 1769 as part of the moor colonization of the Teufelsmoor in the Osterholz district. Around 1758, the project to develop the 1617 acres (404 ha) between Ottersberg and Osterholz was implemented in stages. In 1761 the first village (Ostersode) was settled in the area. After Ostersode followed Wörpedahl in 1766 and finally Bergedorf (1769) east of Wörpedahl. These three villages are typical state bog villages, as they were developed from 1760 in the area around the Teufelsmoor by the bog commissioner Jürgen Christian Findorff.

In 1789, it is stated that the place had three houses and four huts, in which 28 residents, including 14 children, lived. In the 1871 census, there were 358 inhabitants in 58 residential buildings. In 1910 the place had 413 inhabitants.

Years later, the neighboring Neu-Bergedorf, which was located behind the farmsteads of the eastern part of Bergedorf and Adolphsdorf, was also opened up, followed by the western part of Neu-Bergedorf, which is located on Bergedorfer Kirchdamm. This also served the need for day laborers who had already set up their own jobs in the Geest villages. In order to control this and to keep these farmers small, Neu-Bergedorf was developed in a controlled manner by the state. The farms were laid out as half farms, and not as a whole, as in Bergedorf. This ensured that the day laborers remained dependent on the work on the village yard. For example, a farm in the east of Bergedorf consists of a good 20 acres of land and in the parallel opposite Neu-Bergedorf of 10 acres. So it is still the case today that behind a farm in Bergedorf there are two farms in Neu-Bergedorf. These were gradually settled by day laborers who also helped on the farms in Bergedorf. However, not all of the initial settlers were able to do justice to the modest conditions in Neu-Bergedorf, and so today not all of the around 20 farms built around 1880 are still there. One of the row settlements in Neu-Bergedorf that used to be continuous can now only be seen in the middle of Neu-Bergedorfer Damm between house numbers 12 and 16 or, since 2013, back to number 10.
