(6079) Gerokurat is an asteroid of the main asteroid belt discovered on February 28, 1981 by the American astronomer Schelte John Bus at the Siding Spring Observatory .

The asteroid was named on June 24, 2002 after the Austrian mineralogist and meteorite researcher Gero Kurat .
