The open-air museum "Jan vom Moor und Klappstau " in Hollen in the district of Cuxhaven recalls the settlement of the moor towards the end of the 18th century. The museum is located on the road between Hollen and Wittstedt at the Heiser Mühle.
history
On December 3, 1996 the peat barge was bought. In June 1998 the founding assembly of the “Friends and Sponsors of the Open-Air Museum 'Jan vom Moor und Klappstau” ”and 62 members joined. The boat was delivered on August 28, 1997 and the open-air museum was inaugurated on September 4, 1998. The Moorkate, based on plans from 1755, was inaugurated on May 12, 2001.
exhibition
The open-air museum is located on the towpath of the ship ditch, on which the peat was brought from the moor near Hollen to the brickworks near Fleeste and to Bremerhaven to the Geestehafen. The ensemble includes a folding dam, which made it possible to use the peat ship to overcome height differences in the ship's ditch without being locked, a bog and information boards . Next door is a restored windmill from 1877.
Inside the cottage, equipment that was needed for cutting peat is exhibited. The peatland colonization was hard work. It was only after several generations that the settlers were able to live from their income. A district of Hollen is called "Atonement". The name comes from the fact that in the past people were allowed to help with the moor colonization instead of serving a sentence.
Peat path
A cycle path has been set up between the open-air museum and the school museum in Heise and the Großer Moor near Bokel . This “peat path” was created and inaugurated in July 2011 with funds from the EU's LEADER program. It now connects the Heiser Mühle via the school museum and Oberheise with the nature discovery trail including the observation tower and show peat cut in the Great Moor.

Further planning
The Heiser Open Air Museum can be reached by bike via bike paths. As part of the ILEK and LEADER planning, the towpath and the connection to the school museum in the old Heiser school in connection with the school path to Oberheise, past the Pestiche and the sacrificial stone in the Hollener Wald to the Otterbiotop in Lunestedt should be expanded as a hiking trail system.
The Friends' Association has included the Heise School Museum in its sphere of activity. The Heiser Museum is the only one in the Cuxhaven district. There are still facilities of this type in Zetel (East Friesland), Himmelpforten, Hamburg and Bremerhaven.
